Bernard Chapman

With over 20 years in the industry, across both New Zealand and the UK, Bernard Chapman brings a calm, analytical presence to every project he’s involved in. Based in our Wellington office, Bernard is an Associate Director with deep experience in seismic strengthening, major education redevelopments, and complex heritage refurbishments.

Known for his ability to navigate project uncertainty and programme pressure, Bernard provides cost advice that stands up to scrutiny, from early-stage feasibility and Business Case, through to post-contract administration. He’s led estimates for cabinet-level seismic funding proposals, worked extensively across the Ministry of Education portfolio, and regularly supports clients like Department of Corrections, Ministry of Justice, NZ Police, and commercial developers in shaping robust investment decisions.

Some of Bernard’s most enjoyable projects include:
The Great War Exhibition, completed ahead of the 100-year anniversary of WWI – a fast-paced project with design and construction happening concurrently, including immersive design work by Wingnut Films and Sir Peter Jackson’s team.
Meet the Locals at Wellington Zoo – where working in a live zoo environment meant design meetings punctuated by the sounds of animals and watching spider monkeys swing through the trees.

Each project was unique, created for the public to enjoy, and gave Bernard the chance to be part of something truly memorable.

Outside of work, Bernard loves a beach holiday to unwind and lives for his sport – still playing football at masters level and indoor football most weeks, with cricket and rugby high on his list to watch whenever time allows. He’s also a proud dad to an energetic toddler and is forever indebted to his wife, who ensures everything doesn’t fall apart on a weekly basis!
